About the Opera
A Message from the Director:

All the Gilbert and Sullivan operas are great, but perhaps some are more wonderful than others. I have found that those performers who have a deep appreciation of this music, and who have great ability, do want to apply their considerable talents to the more demanding of the G&S catalog. They have shown they could make a challenging opera (like Yeomen and like Iolanthe) work in our little theater space. And so the directors and I have agreed that the very beautiful opera Princess Ida would work well as our next project.

Princess Ida has funny characters, rich language and exquisite music. The amusing plot deals with some serious matters such as war and peace, the “battle of the sexes”, and the age-old questions as even now are on the minds of philosophers and politicians… (Think Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, think Tennyson and his poem The Princess, think Freud and his famous query “What do women want?”)

Gilbert and Sullivan give us the right answer… which leads me to think they were not only great artists, but great men as well.
